ASTRONAUT TO WALK IN SPACE TO HELP SCOTT MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ACHIEVE DREAMS
Math and
Science are Keys to Unlocking Future
WHAT: Dr Bernard Harris, the first African
American astronaut to walk in space, will talk with students at Brenda M. Scott
Middle School about reaching for the
stars as well as their own personal potential through the problem solving
skills they learn in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Dr. Harris will entertain sixth, seventh and eighth
grade students about his adventures in space while also motivating them to
achieve their own goals.
During this stop of his 2009 national “Dream
Tour presented by ExxonMobil,” Dr.
Harris will formally announce this year-long tour which will makes stops at
middle schools in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Indianapolis, Minneapolis/St.
Paul, Miami, Mobile, Oakland and Seattle, as well as Detroit.

WHY:From humble beginnings
in San Antonio, Dr. Harris fulfilled his dreams with hard work and tenacity and
wants to inspire students around the U.S. to believe in themselves and “shoot
for the stars.” Strong math and science
coursework provides students with the skill sets they will need to succeed in
the 21st century.
